The Grim Tidings Podcast Your podcast for all things Grimdark and more!

We’re back with another exciting edition of Author Thunderdome! In one corner representing the US-of-A, it’s multi-genre author, blogger, and reviewer C.T. Phipps, known for such titles as Cthulhu Armageddon, Lucifer’s Star, The Rules of Supervillainy, and Straight Outta Fangton (not to mention a sweet elbow-drop from the top rope). His opponent, hailing from the U.K. and wearing the (rather snug) Union Jack singlet, it’s Rob J. Hayes, author of multiple fantasy series’ including The Ties That Bind, It Takes a Thief, and Best Laid Plans. Join us as these two publishing heavyweights settle the score and duke it out in a bone-crushing literary battle of wits! Who will find glory in the Author Thunderdome? Find C.T. Phipps online at CTPhipps.wordpress.com, and Rob J. Hayes at RobJHayes.co.uk!

It’s the Grim Tidings Podcast Grim Panel: SPFBO 2016! What happens when top book bloggers read and review the best self-published fantasy novels of the year? It’s the Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off, an annual contest hosted by author Mark Lawrence. Hundreds of books and manuscripts were read and reviewed, and we’re joined by the top 3 finalists, Jonathan French, Phil Tucker, and Dyrk Ashton. We’re also joined by Laura M. Hughes, a blogger and reviewer for Fantasy Faction. We discuss what sort of impact an awesome contest like SPFBO can have for an author and what they learned along the way, we highlight what set the finalists apart from the other entries, how to get readers to put your book at the top of their TBR pile, and more!  If you’ve wanted to read more self-published authors, you’ve ever thought about self-publishing, or if you currently self-publish, you won’t want to miss this panel episode!

In this episode we interview not one but two awesome authors, we call it Author Thunderdome! First we have Kentucky Mad Man Kenny Soward, author of the Gnomesaga series, the Dead West series, and Galefire! His podcast opponent is none other than The Dreaded Seth Skorkowsky, author of the Valducan series, the Tales of the Black Raven series, and more! During the bloody confrontation we discuss the genre of urban fantasy, we talk about gaming and the influence it's had on their writing, the imortance of having killer book covers, the consumibility of shorter "pulpy" fiction, the rise of audibooks and writing with a narrator in mind, and much more! It's a literary battle not for the feint of heart or feeble of mind! LISTEN AT YOUR OWN PERIL!

We break from our usual programming to bring a special presentation: a panel conversation talking about mental health and the arts. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD - for many, maintaining daily optimal mental health can be a struggle. In March of 2016, the SFF community was shocked by the sudden loss of author Logan L. Masterson at his own hand, an act preceded by a final plea on social media. In this panel, we speak frankly about the subject of mental health and its role in the arts community, perceptions and misconceptions, mental illness as its portrayed in media, writing characters dealing with mental illness, and tips for those struggling to cope or who may know someone who is. We’re joined by urban fantasy author Kat Richardson, SFF author Raven Oak, and moderated by author Kristi Charish along with blogger Rob Matheny.  To find out more or to get help,visit projectsemicolong.org, or suicidepreventionlifeline.org.
